Possums in my backyard

Possums in my own backyard

seem to be hard of hearing

They scamper around at night

 despite the fact that I’ve told the

I need to go to sleep

 What do they eat these

 complete little demons?

 I hear bits and pieces

 falling about in the dark

 Is it bark that they chew on

 They’ve such funny pokey noses

 and eyes that glow in the night  

It would give you a fright

if they suddenly came in sight

 They snarl and squeal at each other    

I really don’t know why they bother

Making sense of the possums

in my own backyard

is terribly hard when

I’d rather be asleep
